Yarns of Love

Yarns of Love!
After sheets of notebook paper were filled with possibilities, we have finally settled on a name for our charity: Yarns of Love. It is simply about knitting and crocheting scarves for children who need to be warmer in cold weather.

It is not my original idea to help children in this way. Since I NEVER watch the news, I know that it was completely of God that I saw this particular story one day while flipping through channels about a lady named "Miss Sparkles". She inspired me with what she was doing for the children in her neighborhood who were suffering in the cold. She noticed that the children in her neighborhood were shivering as they waited for the school bus. Simply wearing a coat won't keep you warm if it is cold enough outside. It doesn't matter why these children didn't have what they needed, it matters that we can all do something for them.

Making something out of love with our hands, donating yarn to others with the time and talent, or simply giving money for yarn to be purchased. Could it be any simpler? God put this passion into my heart before I even knew how to knit or crochet. I am in the process of learning and I am determined!

I am delighted to have an event where we can pass out these scarves at the Hope for Christmas at West Ridge Church. Our community is filled with families who benefit from this event and we are so blessed to be able to help by giving out some love in the form of handmade scarves!

Give a Day Get a Day - Compton Elementary 2/20/10

Over 150 volunteers spent the day at Compton Elementary in Powder Springs, GA on 2/20/10. The volunteers were 2 years old - 75 years old. They came from Newnan, Gainesville, Loganville, Hiram, Acworth, Austell, Decatur, Norcross, and other areas. They came to work together as a family for the children of this school.

We moved a clothes closet and restocked the closet. The clothes closet is used when children need coats, shoes, clothes. Counselors are thankful that they have the ability to immediately provide assistance to a child/parent as needed. This clothes closet is used every week.

We sorted candy and inspirational notes for the students during CRCT testing week. We sorted books and moved shelves. We painted a wall for the news program. The hallways and door trims were painted. The outside was landscaped and ready for spring. Flowers were planted at the front entrance.

We had an amazing group of volunteers that fed the 150 volunteers break, lunch, snacks and drinks. Some of the children took the firemen at the fire station next to the school breakfast and lunch. They were treated to an A Class tour.

Thank you to the staff at Compton for opening up your school to A Fresh Hope. Our next workday at Compton is 3/27/10. Sign up to volunteer at www.disneyparks.com after 3/1/10. This project will focus on painting door ways and trim work.
